Transportation Infrastructure

By Road 

The transportation backbone of the Roanoke Region is Interstate 81 which runs north-south through the region. It is a heavy trucking corridor increasingly used as an alternative to busy I-95. I-64 (east-west) and I-77 (north-south) frame the region on its northern and southern ends. U.S. 460 provides four-lane divided highway east to the Port of Hampton Roads and in the other direction to Kentucky. U.S. 220, also four-lane divided highway, travels through the region on its way between New York and the southern tip of North Carolina.

By Air

The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport currently is served by 4 airlines offering approximately 50 arriving and departing flights per day with non-stop service to 8 cities.

Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport 

  • 24 hours a day Tower Operation.
  • Two runways. 15/33: 5,800 x 150 ft, asphalt grooved; 06/24: 6,800 x 150 ft, asphalt grooved.
  • Non-stop flight service provided by Delta, United, American Airlines, and Allegiant Air.
  • Terminal Services include: wireless internet access, car rentals, food and beverage services, a gift shop, ground transportation services (taxi, bus, and shuttle), a travel agency, and accessibility options.

Whether traveling domestically or internationally, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport can get you there. Non-stop connection services are provided through the major airline hubs, making travel to and from the Roanoke Region convenient. The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport provides non-stop flight service to and from the following destinations:

By Rail

The Roanoke Region is served by Norfolk Southern and CSX. The region is located on the Heartland  and Crescent Corridors of Norfolk Southern. The Heartland is a direct, high-capacity route that spans from the Port of Virginia to distribution markets in the Midwest. The Crescent spans 11 states and is one of fastest, most direct routes from the Southeast to the Northeast with convenient connections to Mexico and Los Angeles and a rail project which, when completed, will link The Port of Virginia with distribution markets in the Midwest. An I-81 intermodal facility is planned for the region.

 



Freight

More than 70 lines serve the Roanoke region with local, state and interstate service. UPS operates an air and ground hub, with its daily flight leaving at 10:30 p.m. Most of the US east of the Mississippi River can be reached with 1- or 2-day ground service. Federal Express also offers freight service out of the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.

UPS

UPS has a large hub center near Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport that offers late pick up times and has guaranteed on-time delivery for LTL shipments to half the U.S.within two days.

Intermodal Shipping

The Roanoke Region offers the maximum flexibility in getting goods to and from your place of business.  

NS Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer Terminal
 
Norfolk Southern’s Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer Terminal offers intermodal capabilities for bulk commodities including food ingredients (flour, corn starch, sugar, syrups), liquid chemicals, plastic pellets, construction materials (lumber, rebar, beams, steel, sand, cement, aggregate),  and others.  Customers wishing to take advantage of long-haul rail efficiency but requiring the flexibility of truck delivery will find a suitable solution in the Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer Terminal.  
 
NS Regional Intermodal Facility
 
A regional intermodal container facility is planned adjacent to Interstate 81. Completion date is to be announced. 

Inland Port

The Roanoke Region is located within the Virginia TradePort (#1412) and Foreign Trade Zone #238.
