Roanoke Region Hike Makes Top Trail List

USA Today recognized McAfee Knob for National Trails Day (June 6) as one of 15 trails that end with a spectacular view.

If you haven’t made the hike along the Appalachian Trail near Roanoke, this is the time to try it. (It’s the only hike in Virginia to make the list.)

Here’s the description from USA Today’s Experience America post: “On a clear day along the Appalachian Trail near Roanoke, Va., you can easily see the Southern Shenandoah Valley from McAfee Knob, one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail; closer in you’ll find stunning views of the Catawba Valley. The hike is about 6 miles long round trip and affords 270-degree views, as well as a downhill return.”

  • Acadia National Park (Maine)
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (Michigan)
  • Pu’u Pehe, also known as Sweetheart Rock (Hawaii)
  • Yosemite National Park (California)
