Roanoke Region Hospitals Receive Top Performer Honors

Joint commission gold sealCarilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and LewisGale Medical Center were named “Top Performers” by the Joint Commission, an independent organization that accredits the nation’s hospitals.

Only about one-third of the 3,300 accredited hospitals in the U.S. receive the “Top Performer” designation from the commission. This is the first time the Carilion Clinic has made the list; LewisGale has made the list the past four years.

LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski and LewisGale Hospital Alleghany were the system’s other three facilities that were named Top Performers.

The Top Performer designation is based on detailed evaluations of treatment and patient outcomes in 10 categories, such as heart failure, pneumonia, stroke, children’s asthma and other common conditions. To make the grade, a hospital must complete a three-step process.

First, it must achieve a composite rate of 95 percent or higher across all 10 categories. Second, it must meet that benchmark for every category for which there were at least 30 cases. And finally, it must achieve a composite score of 95 percent or higher in a least one category over the past 12 months in which all individual measures were also 95 percent or higher.

Also named a top performer in the region was Catawba Hospital, a state-run psychiatric facility in Roanoke County.
