Several school systems offer educational choices. Some of these programs may be open to students throughout the region at all grade levels.

Governor Schools

Governor’s schools offer gifted students an advanced academic program in subjects ranging from math and science to computer technology and the arts.

Jackson River Governor’s School 
Gives motivated high school juniors and seniors in Alleghany County and Covington the opportunity to participate in an innovative and challenging program of studies in mathematics, science, and technology.

Serves highly-motivated secondary school students from the Roanoke Valley in science, mathematics, computer science, and technology.

STEM & Gifted Programs

Unique learning experiences at schools throughout the Roanoke Region allow students to develop individual talents and interests. Programs include Computer Science; High Technology; Science; Mathematics and Computers; Aviation; Performing Arts; Visual Arts; Communications; Engineering and Aerospace.

Burton Center for Arts and Technology
As one of the Commonwealth’s Governor’s STEM Academies, Burton prepares students in mechatronics, motorsports, communication, and engineering and produces students with hands-on experience in machining, welding, and advanced manufacturing technologies.

Botetourt County STEM-H Academy 
Located in the Greenfield Education and Training Center, the County’s STEM-H academy offers students the opportunity to graduate high school holding an associate’s degree.  Three instructional tracks include pre-engineering, health occupations, and information systems technology.  Classes are taught through a unique partnership between Botetourt County Public Schools and Virginia Western Community College.

Gereau Center for Applied Technology and Career Exploration 
Located in Rocky Mount, it offers all Franklin County 8th graders a full semester of hands-on learning and exploration in a choice of eight modules representing the skills and career opportunities of the future: environmental/natural resources; arts; manufacturing; health & human services; engineering/architectural design; media design; legal science; and finance.
