Mechanical Development Company, now known as Medeco, was founded in 1968 as a small tool and die shop in Salem, VA, with the invention of a unique locking principle using angled key cuts and the elevation and rotation of special pin tumblers to provide millions of different key combinations. Today, the Medeco manufacturing facility is still located in Salem, employing approximately 280 people. Medeco leads the security industry in innovation and design. Our security products are trusted by some of the most high-profile sites nationally and internationally.

How is the Roanoke Region important to your business?

The Roanoke Region is important to Medeco because our high-security products require a high-quality workforce. Building locks and security products that protect some of the highest-profile sites across the world requires intricate work, and that’s only possible with a strong and skilled workforce. Roanoke’s business-friendly climate has helped Medeco thrive for more than 55 years, and we credit a large part of our continued success and growth to being based here in the Roanoke Region.
