Matt Miller Named Director of Market Intelligence at Roanoke Regional Partnership

The Roanoke Regional Partnership welcomes Matt Miller as the new director of market intelligence. He has assumed the data analysis and market intelligence role previously performed by John Hull, who was selected as the Partnership’s executive director earlier in 2021.

Matt is one of several top talent recruits starting at the Partnership this year. His 25 years of experience in the region working on demographic research, economic impact analysis, mapping, and planning with the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission made him a perfect match for this high-caliber team.

“Matt and I have had an excellent working relationship for years, we’ve always collaborated and shared data intelligence to advance programs throughout the Roanoke Region,” said John Hull, executive director of the Partnership. “It was my pleasure to recruit Matt to the Partnership team, I have no doubt he’ll be a valuable asset.”

The director of market intelligence turns data and information into actionable insights; this vital role assists government partners to understand complex issues through data, guides developers to better understand market opportunities, stays abreast on development activity, and responds to investor and prospect information requests.

“I am excited about using my regionally specific experience and knowledge to help sell the Roanoke Region as a great place to live, work and play,” said Miller. “The transition from planning to implementation and front-line economic development is a change I look forward to, and I am honored to be a part of the excellent Partnership team.”

As part of the Thrive 2027 plan, the Partnership identified the need to advocate for the acceleration of commercial and industrial real estate development and related funding as one of the top priorities over the next five years. This position will provide the necessary data and information to shed light on needs in areas such as transportation, broadband, workforce, and other infrastructure needs.

Matt’s work in the formation of the Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority and as the coordinator of the Statewide Geographic Information System (GIS) Conferences which were held in the region will serve him well in the endeavor.

Matt will also be responsible for tracking and reporting on issues that can have an adverse impact on economic competitiveness and livability. The research can help inform efforts to mitigate problems, such as housing availability and affordability, and access to quality childcare while expanding the Partnership’s reach in the broader community.

During his expansive career, Matt also worked closely with the Roanoke Valley Greenways providing him an appreciation for the importance of outdoor amenities to economic development.

Matt Miller is a graduate of James Madison University and he holds a Master’s degree from Virginia Tech in Geography.
